Edit graphic and binary resources PDF Print E-mail

Graphic and binary resources are edited in external editors. The user can set up external editors on the Tools tab in the Options dialog (Tools>Options…). The settings of the editor are configured for each type of resources separately. Radialix 2 has a built-in editor for some types of resources; other types of data can be edited only in an external editor.

The Resource Type column lists resource types. The Tool column displays the editor settings. To configure the editor settings, you need to expand the branch of the required type of resource and change the settings in the cells in the Tool column.

Tool type – select one of the types in the drop-down list:

  • Internal – built-in editor;
  • Shell – external editor. The operating system shell runs the editor by the extension specified in the File extension field;
  • Application – external editor. The launch of the executable file of the editor, whose name is specified in the Tool file name field.

File extension – file extension, which is used to create the name of a temporary file and to launch the editor using the OS shell. The field is used only for external editors.

Tool file name – path and name of the executable file of the external editor when the editor type is set to Application. The path can contain names of variables enclosed in percent symbols (%).

Save file name – path and name of a file to save a resource to before an external editor is launched. The path may contain tags (<...>) and variables (%..%). You can insert a tag from the drop-down menu of the Tag button, which is shown during field editing.

Command line – command line path to run an external editor when the editor type is set to Application. The field may contain tags (<...>) and variables (%..%). You can insert a tag from the drop-down menu of the Tag button, which is shown during field editing.

To save a resource to file and load from file, Radialix 2 uses an extension for files of an external editor, associated with this type of resource.

Run the editor

If it is allowed to edit a resource using an external editor, the user can run it from the editor panel with a double click on the cell with a value in the translation column. You can also run an external editor from the context menu of this cell.

Before running an external editor, Radialix 2 saves the selected resource to a temporary file, runs an external editor and gives the name of this temporary file to the external editor as a parameter of command line. The results of editing must be saved to the same temporary file before an external editor is closed. Then edited data is loaded from a temporary file back to the project.
